X / TWITTER DM MODULE™
The 10-second rule. 3 proven DM scripts. Platform-specific strategy for social outreach.
X (formerly Twitter) has become one of the most active recruiting platforms in college sports. Coaches use it to discover athletes, evaluate character, and communicate interest. A well-managed X presence can open doors that emails alone cannot.
The key is treating X as a professional platform, not a personal one. Every post, every DM, and every interaction is visible to coaches. Your X profile is an extension of your recruiting profile.
Use your real name or a variation of it. No nicknames, no numbers. @JohnSmith_WR26 is professional. @BigPlayJay is not.
Your Hudl or YouTube highlight link should be in your bio. Every coach who visits your profile should be able to access your film in one click.
2026 WR | 6'1" 185 | [High School] | [City, State] | [GPA] | Hudl: [link]. Clean, informative, professional.
Post 2-3 times per week. Game highlights, practice clips, academic achievements. Show coaches a full picture of who you are.
"A COACH DECIDES IN 10 SECONDS WHETHER YOUR DM IS WORTH READING."
Your DM needs to communicate three things in the first sentence: who you are, what you play, and why you're reaching out. Everything else is secondary. If a coach has to scroll to find your film link, you've already lost them.
Lead with your sport-specific opener. Name, year, position, location, school interest, film link. That's it. Keep it under 280 characters.
When a coach follows you back, that's a signal of interest. Respond quickly and specifically — mention something real about their program.
Use performance moments as natural follow-up triggers. Keep it brief and confident. Coaches respect athletes who let their performance do the talking.
Showing you watch their games is a powerful differentiator. Be specific — coaches know generic compliments.

These scripts give you the framework. Proactive Athletes flips the script — we get coaches reaching out to athletes, not the other way around. The Proactive Athletes App is your next step up — or let our team run the full outreach for you.
