CORE GPA IS NOT YOUR SCHOOL GPA

CRITICAL DISTINCTION

Your school GPA includes every class you take. Your NCAA Core GPA is calculated only from approved core courses. These numbers are often different — and it's your Core GPA that determines NCAA eligibility, not your transcript GPA.

16 REQUIRED CORE COURSES
4
English
Grammar, composition, literature, speech
3
Mathematics
Must include Algebra I or higher
2
Natural/Physical Science
At least 1 must be a lab science
2
Social Science
History, economics, political science, geography
4
Additional Core Courses
From any of the above areas, or foreign language, comparative religion, or philosophy
Total: 16 core courses required for D1 and D2 eligibility

Note on ACT Sum Score: The NCAA uses the ACT sum score (total of all 4 sections: English + Math + Reading + Science, max 144) — not the composite score (1–36). These are different numbers.
REGISTRATION PROCESS

HOW TO REGISTER WITH THE NCAA ELIGIBILITY CENTER

01
Create Your Account
Freshman or Sophomore Year

Go to eligibilitycenter.ncaa.org and create a free account. You'll need your high school's NCAA code (your school counselor has this). Start early — there's no penalty for registering before you need it.

Register at NCAA Eligibility Center →
02
Submit Your Amateurism Certification
Before Accepting Any Benefits

The NCAA requires all athletes to certify their amateur status. This includes disclosing any payments, sponsorships, or benefits received. Complete this early — violations can affect eligibility even if unintentional.

03
Request Official Transcripts
After Junior Year

Ask your high school registrar to send official transcripts directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center. This is required — unofficial transcripts are not accepted. Your school may charge a small fee.

04
Verify Core Courses
Junior Year — Before Senior Year Scheduling

Log into your account and verify that your completed courses appear on the NCAA's approved core course list. Not all courses count — AP, honors, and standard courses may or may not qualify depending on your school's approval status.

Check Your School's Approved Courses →
05
Submit Test Scores (Historical Reference)
N/A — Test Scores No Longer Required (2023)

As of January 2023, the NCAA eliminated SAT/ACT test score requirements for D1 and D2 initial eligibility. Test scores are no longer submitted to or evaluated by the Eligibility Center. The sliding scale is now historical reference only.

06
Receive Your Certification
After Graduation / Before Enrollment

Once your final transcript is submitted and all requirements are verified, the NCAA Eligibility Center will certify your eligibility status. Colleges you've listed will be notified. You must be certified before you can compete at the D1 or D2 level.

6 ELIGIBILITY MISTAKES THAT END CAREERS

Assuming your school GPA = Core GPA
Your Core GPA is calculated only from NCAA-approved core courses. Log into the Eligibility Center and verify your courses are on the approved list.
Taking electives instead of core courses
Every elective you take instead of a core course is a missed opportunity. Plan your 4-year schedule around the 16 core course requirement from Day 1.
Waiting until senior year to register
Register freshman or sophomore year. Issues with course approval or transcript submission can take months to resolve — you need time.
Not checking if your courses are NCAA-approved
Use the NCAA's High School Portal to verify your school's approved core courses. Not all courses with the right name qualify.
Accepting benefits without disclosing them
Any payment, sponsorship, or benefit — even small ones — must be disclosed. When in doubt, disclose. Undisclosed benefits can end your eligibility.
Thinking D3 doesn't require registration
D3 schools do not require NCAA Eligibility Center certification, but D1 and D2 do. If you have any D1/D2 interest, register early.
ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS
JUCO PATHWAYS — NJCAA, CCCAA & DIVISION LEVELS

JUCO is the umbrella term for all junior college athletics. The two primary governing bodies are the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association, covering programs nationwide) and the CCCAA (California Community College Athletic Association, covering California's 116 community colleges). Both operate independently from the NCAA Eligibility Center, each with their own division levels (D1, D2, D3 within NJCAA) and scholarship structures. JUCO programs are legitimate pathways to 4-year NCAA or NAIA programs for athletes who need more development time, want to strengthen their academic record, or are looking to expand their recruiting options.

NJCAA — NATIONAL GOVERNING BODY (ALL STATES EXCEPT CA)
No Eligibility Center Registration
JUCO athletes do NOT register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Each NJCAA school handles eligibility independently.
2 Years of Eligibility
NJCAA programs offer 2 years of competition. After JUCO, athletes can transfer to a 4-year school with up to 2 years of NCAA eligibility remaining.
Three Division Levels
NJCAA has D1, D2, and D3 divisions — each with different scholarship rules. D1 offers full scholarships, D2 offers partial, D3 is non-scholarship. Athletes should target the right division based on their academic and athletic profile.
Academic Requirements
NJCAA D1: 2.0 GPA minimum. D2/D3: varies by school. No core course requirement — total GPA from all courses counts, unlike NCAA Core GPA.
Transfer to NCAA
After 1–2 years at JUCO, athletes can transfer to NCAA D1 or D2. They must meet NCAA transfer eligibility rules and have the required core GPA from high school.
Best Sports for JUCO Path
Basketball and Baseball have the highest JUCO program counts (500+ each). Football, Softball, and Soccer also have strong JUCO pipelines.
NJCAA Eligibility Info
CCCAA — CALIFORNIA'S JUCO GOVERNING BODY (116 SCHOOLS)
California-Specific System
The CCCAA governs athletics at California's 116 community colleges. It is separate from the NJCAA and has its own eligibility rules.
Unit & GPA Requirements
Athletes must be enrolled in at least 12 units per semester and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Academic progress standards apply each semester.
2 Years of Eligibility
Like JUCO, CCCAA offers 2 years of competition. Athletes can then transfer to a 4-year NCAA or NAIA school.
No Separate Division Levels
Unlike NJCAA, the CCCAA does not have D1/D2/D3 divisions — all 116 California community colleges compete under one structure, though individual school resources and competition levels vary significantly.
No Amateurism Certification
CCCAA does not require NCAA amateurism certification. However, if an athlete plans to transfer to an NCAA school, they must complete NCAA eligibility requirements before competing.
Transfer to NCAA
California community college athletes who transfer to NCAA D1/D2 must meet NCAA initial eligibility requirements (16 core courses, Core GPA) if they didn't meet them out of high school.
Strong Transfer Pipeline
California community colleges are a well-established pathway to D1 programs — especially in Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, and Track & Field.

KEY DIFFERENCE FROM NCAA

NCAA eligibility is determined before you enroll — based on your high school record. JUCO eligibility (whether NJCAA or CCCAA) is determined while you're enrolled — based on your current academic standing each semester. This makes JUCO a more accessible entry point, but the transfer process back to NCAA requires careful planning and proactive recruiting outreach — coaches at 4-year schools need to know who you are before your eligibility window closes.

Knowing the eligibility rules is the foundation — but recruiting is about proactive outreach, positioning yourself in front of the right coaches, and executing a strategy from freshman year through signing day.
